Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to analyze and interpret text while having fun exploring the world of Minecraft.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer or tablet with Minecraft installed
  • A notebook or paper for taking notes
  • A pencil or pen

Prior knowledge of Minecraft gameplay and basic reading skills are required.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Minecraft Story Mode
  2. Start by discussing Minecraft Story Mode, a game mode within Minecraft that focuses on storytelling and decision-making. Explain that you will be playing through an episode together to practice reading and comprehension skills.

  3. Reading and Analyzing Dialogue
  4. Play through the first chapter of Minecraft Story Mode together, pausing after each dialogue sequence. Have the student read the dialogue out loud and discuss the characters' motivations and emotions based on what they say.

  5. Character Analysis
  6. After completing the chapter, have the student choose one character from the story and write a character analysis. They should describe the character's personality, appearance, and role in the story, providing evidence from the dialogue to support their analysis.

  7. Sequencing Events
  8. Choose a key event from the chapter and have the student write a sequence of events leading up to and following that event. Encourage them to use transitional words like "first," "next," "then," and "finally" to organize their thoughts.

  9. Creating a Minecraft Story
  10. Using the Minecraft game as inspiration, have the student create their own short story or dialogue between Minecraft characters. They can write it down or act it out, focusing on using descriptive language and engaging dialogue.
