Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic concepts to solve problems related to robotics.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- Robotic toys or pictures of robots (optional)
Activities
-
Introduction to Robotics
Show the student pictures of robots or use robotic toys to capture their interest. Discuss what robots are and how they are used in different areas of our lives.
-
Counting Robots
Ask the student to count the number of robots in a given picture or the number of robotic toys you have. Practice counting aloud and writing the corresponding numbers.
-
Addition with Robots
Use the robotic toys or pictures to create addition problems. For example, if you have 3 robots and add 2 more, how many robots do you have in total? Encourage the student to write down the addition equations and solve them using objects or drawings.
-
Subtraction with Robots
Similarly, use the robotic toys or pictures to create subtraction problems. For instance, if you have 5 robots and remove 2, how many robots are left? Have the student write down the subtraction equations and solve them visually.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Robots are machines that can do tasks automatically. They can help us in many ways, like cleaning our homes or assembling cars."
- "Counting is a way to find out how many things there are. Let's count the robots together."
- "Addition means putting things together. We can add the number of robots to find the total."
- "Subtraction means taking away. We can subtract the number of robots to find out how many are left."
