Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic algebraic concepts while having fun with a zombie theme.
Materials and Prep
- Whiteboard or paper
- Markers or pencils
Activities
-
Warm-up: Zombie Counting
Start by counting zombies together. Write numbers from 1 to 10 on the whiteboard or paper, and draw a zombie next to each number. Count aloud while pointing to each zombie. Encourage the student to count along with you.
-
Zombie Addition
Introduce addition using zombies. Draw two zombies on the whiteboard or paper, and write the numbers 2 and 3 next to them. Ask the student to count the total number of zombies. Explain that adding the numbers together gives us the total. Write the addition equation: 2 + 3 = 5. Repeat with different numbers.
-
Zombie Subtraction
Continue with subtraction using zombies. Draw five zombies on the whiteboard or paper, and write the number 5 next to them. Ask the student to count the total number of zombies. Explain that subtracting a number means taking some zombies away. Erase or cross out a few zombies and write the subtraction equation: 5 - 2 = 3. Repeat with different numbers.
-
Zombie Equations
Now, introduce simple algebraic equations using zombies. Write an equation on the whiteboard or paper, such as: 2 + ? = 4. Explain that we need to find the missing number that, when added to 2, gives us a total of 4. Encourage the student to think and solve the equation. Repeat with different equations.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Zombies are fun creatures that we can use to learn math!"
- "When we add numbers, we can find the total."
- "When we subtract numbers, we can take some away."
- "An equation is like a puzzle. We need to find the missing number."
