Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply geometric concepts to collecting foliage, such as identifying different shapes and angles found in leaves and plants.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper or notebook
  • Pencils or pens
  • Access to a garden, park, or outdoor area with foliage

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Take a nature walk in the garden or park, and collect various leaves and plants that interest you.
  2. Examine the collected foliage and identify different shapes present, such as triangles, rectangles, circles, or irregular shapes.
  3. Draw the shapes you observe in your notebook and label them accordingly.
  4. Measure the angles of the leaves using a protractor if possible. Identify right angles, acute angles, and obtuse angles.
  5. Create a collage or artwork using the collected foliage, arranging them in different geometric patterns or designs.

Seventh Grade Talking Points

  • "Geometry is all around us, even in nature. Today, we will explore geometric concepts while collecting foliage."
  • "Shapes are an important part of geometry. Can you identify any shapes you see in the leaves and plants we collected?"
  • "Angles are another aspect of geometry. Let's measure the angles of the leaves to see if we can find any right angles, acute angles, or obtuse angles."
  • "By creating a collage or artwork using the collected foliage, we can apply geometric patterns and designs to our creative expression."
  • "Remember, geometry is not just about numbers and formulas. It can be fun and creative, especially when we explore it in the world around us."
