Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to demonstrate basic aerial silks moves and understand the importance of physical fitness in aerial arts.

Materials and Prep

  • Aerial silks
  • A sturdy anchor point (such as a beam or tree branch)
  • A crash mat or thick padding
  • Comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement
  • Water bottle

Before starting this lesson, make sure you have a safe and suitable space to practice aerial silks. It is also important to have a basic understanding of proper warm-up and stretching techniques.

Activities

  1. Warm-up: Begin with a dynamic warm-up routine to prepare your body for the physical demands of aerial silks. Include exercises such as jogging in place, arm circles, lunges, and jumping jacks.
  2. Basic Aerial Silks Moves: Learn and practice the following moves:
    • Foot Lock: Wrap one foot around the silks and secure it by crossing the other foot over it.
    • Single Knee Hang: Hang from the silks by gripping one knee and extending the other leg straight out.
    • Pike: Fold your body in half while hanging from the silks, keeping your legs straight and reaching for your toes.
    • Straddle Invert: From a hanging position, bring your legs up and open them into a straddle position while rotating your body upside down.
  3. Combination Routine: Combine the moves you have learned into a short routine. Focus on smooth transitions and fluidity of movement.
  4. Cool Down and Stretch: Finish the lesson with a cool-down routine that includes static stretches for the major muscle groups used during aerial silks.
