Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will learn about potato harvesting and understand the process involved in growing and harvesting potatoes.
Materials and Prep
- 1 potato
- Shovel or garden trowel
- Container for soil
- Access to a garden or outdoor space
- Optional: gardening gloves
Prior knowledge: Basic understanding of plant growth and the importance of sunlight, water, and nutrients for plants.
Activities
- Introduction: Start by discussing what the student already knows about potatoes and their growth. Ask questions like, "Have you ever seen a potato plant? Do you know how potatoes grow?"
- Planting a Potato: Take the student outdoors to a garden or a designated area. Dig a small hole in the soil using a shovel or garden trowel. Place a potato in the hole with the sprout facing upwards. Cover the potato with soil, leaving a small portion of the sprout exposed. Water the soil gently.
- Caring for the Potato Plant: Explain to the student the importance of watering the plant regularly and providing it with sunlight. Encourage them to observe the plant's growth over time and take note of any changes.
- Harvesting the Potatoes: After a few weeks, when the plant has grown and the leaves have started to turn yellow and wither, it's time to harvest the potatoes. Carefully dig around the base of the plant, being cautious not to damage the potatoes. Use your hands or a shovel to gently unearth the potatoes from the soil.
- Examining the Harvest: Once the potatoes are harvested, have the student examine them. Discuss the different sizes, shapes, and colors of the potatoes. Encourage them to compare the harvested potatoes with the original potato that was planted.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "Potatoes are a type of root vegetable that grow underground."
- "Potato plants need sunlight, water, and nutrients from the soil to grow."
- "The sprout on the potato is called an 'eye' and is where new growth begins."
- "Potato plants produce flowers, but the potatoes we eat are actually the swollen underground stems of the plant."
- "When the leaves of the potato plant turn yellow and wither, it means the potatoes are ready to be harvested."
- "Potatoes come in different shapes, sizes, and colors, depending on the variety."
