Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts related to mushrooms.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Counting objects (e.g., buttons, small toys)
- Images or drawings of mushrooms
Prior knowledge: Basic counting skills.
Activities
Count the Mushrooms: Show the student different images or drawings of mushrooms and ask them to count how many mushrooms are in each picture. Write down the number of mushrooms next to each image.
Addition and Subtraction with Mushrooms: Use the counting objects to represent mushrooms. Ask the student to add or subtract mushrooms by physically moving the objects. For example, if there are 3 mushrooms and we add 2 more, how many mushrooms do we have now? If we remove 1 mushroom, how many are left?
Pattern Recognition: Create a simple pattern using mushroom images or drawings. For example, mushroom, mushroom, blank, mushroom, mushroom, blank. Ask the student to identify the missing mushroom in the pattern and explain why they chose that option.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Mushrooms are interesting plants that come in different shapes and sizes."
- "We can count how many mushrooms are in a picture by pointing at each one and saying the numbers."
- "When we add mushrooms, we are putting more together. When we subtract mushrooms, we are taking some away."
- "Patterns are like a special order. We can find patterns in many things, including mushrooms. Can you find the missing mushroom in this pattern?"
