Objective

By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to understand the concept of citizenship and government, while exploring their interest in mushrooms.

Materials and Prep

  • Mushroom picture book or mushroom illustrations
  • Whiteboard or large paper
  • Markers or crayons

Activities

  1. Show and Tell: Begin the lesson by asking the toddler to bring their favorite mushroom picture book or illustrations. Have them share why they find mushrooms interesting.
  2. Mushroom Exploration: Use the mushroom pictures or illustrations to discuss different types of mushrooms and their characteristics. Encourage the toddler to ask questions and share their observations.
  3. Creating Mushroom Citizens: Explain the concept of citizenship and government in simple terms. Ask the toddler to imagine that mushrooms are citizens and draw their own mushroom citizens on the whiteboard or large paper. Encourage creativity and discussion about the responsibilities of citizens.
  4. Role Play: Engage the toddler in a role play activity where they pretend to be the mayor of a mushroom city. Ask them to make decisions for the city and explain why they made those choices. This will help them understand the role of government in making decisions for citizens.

Toddler Grade Talking Points

  • "Citizenship means being a part of a group or community. Just like mushrooms, people can be citizens too!"
  • "Citizens have responsibilities, like following rules and helping others. Can you think of some things you can do to be a good citizen?"
  • "Government is like the boss of a city. They make decisions to keep everyone safe and happy, just like the mayor of a mushroom city."
  • "As the mayor of our mushroom city, what decisions do you think you would make to make sure everyone is happy and the city is running smoothly?"
