Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand what owls eat and their role in the ecosystem.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Access to the internet or books about owls

Activities

  1. Research: Use the internet or books to find information about what owls eat. Take notes on interesting facts you discover.

  2. Food Chain Game: Create a food chain using owls as the top predator. Draw or write down the different animals that make up the food chain, starting from the smallest prey to the owl. Explain how each animal is connected in the chain.

  3. Role Play: Pretend to be an owl and act out hunting for food. Use your knowledge of what owls eat to determine what you would be looking for and how you would catch your prey. You can even create a short skit or draw a comic strip to show your hunting skills.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • Owls are birds of prey that hunt for their food. They have special adaptations that help them catch their prey.

  • Owls mainly eat small mammals like mice, voles, and rabbits. They also eat birds, insects, and sometimes fish.

  • They have sharp beaks and talons to catch and kill their prey. Owls also have excellent night vision and can fly silently, making them stealthy hunters.

  • Owls play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to control populations of rodents and other small animals.
