Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use basic arithmetic skills to take apart a toy car.
Materials and Prep
- Toy car
- Work area with a flat surface
- Optional: Screwdriver or other tools for disassembly
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a safe and comfortable work area to take apart the toy car.
Activities
- Examine the toy car: Look at the different parts of the toy car and identify any visible screws or connectors.
- Plan the disassembly: Decide which parts you want to take apart and how you will approach the disassembly process.
- Use arithmetic to count and keep track: As you remove screws or separate parts, count how many you have taken off and keep track of them.
- Observe and describe: Take a moment to observe and describe the parts you have taken apart. What do they look like? How do they fit together?
- Reflect on the process: Think about the steps you took and the arithmetic skills you used during the disassembly. How did counting and keeping track help you?
Transitional-Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

- "We will use our counting skills to keep track of the screws and parts we remove."
- "Let's carefully examine the toy car and see if we can find any screws or connectors."
- "Remember to count each screw or part as you take it off. This will help us keep track of everything."
- "After we have taken apart the toy car, we will observe and describe the different parts we find."
- "Think about how counting and keeping track helped us during the disassembly process. Can you explain it?"
