Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the biological concepts related to skateboarding, including the anatomy of the human body and the physics behind skateboarding tricks.
Materials and Prep
- Skateboard
- Protective gear (helmet, knee pads, elbow pads)
- Open space for skateboarding
- Access to online resources or books about human anatomy and physics
Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of biology and physics concepts.
Activities
- Warm-up: Start with a brief discussion on the importance of physical fitness and how skateboarding can contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
- Anatomy of Skateboarding: Explain the main muscle groups used in skateboarding, such as quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles. Discuss how these muscles work together to perform skateboarding tricks.
- Physics of Skateboarding: Introduce the concept of center of gravity and how it affects balance and stability while skateboarding. Demonstrate how shifting weight can control the direction and speed of the skateboard.
- Skateboarding Tricks: Choose a few popular skateboarding tricks and explain the physics behind them. For example, discuss how the kickflip involves the application of force and the conservation of angular momentum.
- Hands-on Practice: Allow the student to practice skateboarding tricks while focusing on applying the knowledge gained about anatomy and physics. Provide guidance and feedback as needed.
Eighth Grade Talking Points
- "Did you know that skateboarding can be a great way to stay fit and improve your overall physical health?"
- "When you perform tricks on a skateboard, your muscles play a crucial role in generating the necessary force and movement."
- "Understanding the physics behind skateboarding can help you become a better skater and execute tricks more effectively."
- "The center of gravity is an important concept to grasp when it comes to maintaining balance while skateboarding."
- "By shifting your weight and applying force at the right time, you can control the movement and direction of the skateboard."
- "Skateboarding tricks involve the application of various physics principles, such as the conservation of angular momentum."
- "Remember, practice makes perfect! Take the time to practice the tricks we discussed, and don't be afraid to try new ones."
