Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic library skills related to pumpkins and have fun exploring books about pumpkins.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer or tablet with internet access
  • A library card (if available)
  • Optional: Paper and crayons for drawing

Activities

  1. Start by discussing with your child what they already know about pumpkins. Ask questions like "What color are pumpkins?", "Where do pumpkins grow?", and "What can we make with pumpkins?" This will help build their prior knowledge and engage them in the topic.
  2. Next, explain that you will be visiting a virtual library to find books about pumpkins. Show them how to navigate to the online library catalog or website using the computer or tablet.
  3. Search for books about pumpkins using keywords like "pumpkins", "fall", or "Halloween". Show your child how to click on book titles to read more about them, including the cover, summary, and any reviews available.
  4. Choose a few books that seem interesting and read them together. Encourage your child to ask questions and make observations about the pictures and words in the books.
  5. After reading, ask your child to draw a picture of their favorite part of the story or something they learned about pumpkins. If they prefer, they can also write or dictate a sentence or two about their drawing.
