Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic skills to solve horse-themed math problems.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Plain paper or notebook

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Horse Race Addition

Draw a horse race track on a piece of paper. Create addition problems using numbers up to 20. For example, 8 + 5 = ? Place two toy horses at the starting line. Ask the student to solve the addition problem and move one of the horses forward the correct number of spaces. Continue with more problems until one horse reaches the finish line.

  2. Activity 2: Hay Bale Subtraction

Draw a field on a piece of paper and place multiple hay bales in different locations. Write subtraction problems using numbers up to 20. For instance, 15 - 7 = ? Ask the student to solve the subtraction problem and remove the correct number of hay bales from the field. Repeat with more problems until all hay bales are gone.

  3. Activity 3: Horse Jump Multiplication

Create a multiplication table up to 10 on a piece of paper. Set up a small obstacle course using objects like books or blocks. Assign each obstacle a multiplication problem, such as 3 x 4 = ? Ask the student to solve the problem and make the toy horse jump over the corresponding obstacle. Repeat with different multiplication problems.
