Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe basic geometric shapes found in Rocket League.

Materials and Prep

  • Computer or gaming console with Rocket League
  • Paper and pencil

Activities

  1. Start by playing a few rounds of Rocket League together. Pay attention to the different shapes you encounter in the game, such as the ball, the goals, and the cars.

  2. After playing, take a break and grab your paper and pencil. Draw and label the different shapes you observed in Rocket League. For example, you can draw a circle for the ball, rectangles for the goals, and triangles for the cars.

  3. Discuss the characteristics of each shape. Talk about how circles have no corners, rectangles have four sides and four right angles, and triangles have three sides and three corners.

  4. Challenge yourself by finding real-life objects around your home that resemble the shapes you encountered in Rocket League. Take a walk around your house and identify objects that are circles, rectangles, and triangles. Write down or draw these objects on your paper.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "In Rocket League, we can find different shapes like circles, rectangles, and triangles."
  • "Circles are round and have no corners. The ball in Rocket League is an example of a circle."
  • "Rectangles have four sides and four right angles. The goals in Rocket League are examples of rectangles."
  • "Triangles have three sides and three corners. The cars in Rocket League have a triangular shape."
  • "Let's look for objects around our house that have similar shapes to what we saw in Rocket League."
