Materials and Prep

- A magnifying glass
- A small hammer or rock pick

- A hard surface for cracking the geode

Activities
- Introduction: Show the geode specimen to the student and explain that it is a special type of rock that contains beautiful crystals inside.
- Observation: Use the magnifying glass to closely examine the outside of the geode. Discuss the texture and color.
- Cracking the geode: Place the geode on the towel or cloth, and carefully strike it with the hammer or rock pick on the hard surface. Encourage the student to wear safety goggles or glasses for protection. Observe the cracks that form.
- Exploration: Open the cracked geode and explore the crystals inside. Talk about their shapes, colors, and textures.
- Art activity: Provide paper and crayons for the student to draw their own geode, including the outer shell and the crystals inside.
