Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to play basic guitar chords and strumming patterns, and practice independently for 20-30 minutes a day.

Materials and Prep

  • Acoustic or electric guitar
  • Guitar pick
  • Guitar tuner (optional, but recommended)
  • Printed chord chart (available online)
  • Comfortable chair or stool
  • Quiet practice space

No prior knowledge or experience with guitar is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction to the guitar:

Start by familiarizing yourself with the different parts of the guitar - the body, neck, headstock, frets, and strings. Learn how to hold the guitar properly, ensuring it is comfortable and stable.

  2. Basic chords:

Begin by learning a few basic chords, such as E minor, A minor, and D major. Practice placing your fingers on the correct frets and strumming each chord individually.

  3. Strumming patterns:

Once you are comfortable with the basic chords, practice different strumming patterns. Start with simple downstrokes and gradually incorporate upstrokes and more complex patterns.

  4. Playing a simple song:

Choose a song that uses the chords you have learned and practice playing it. Start by playing one chord per measure and gradually increase the complexity by adding more chords and strumming patterns.

  5. Independent practice:

Allocate 20-30 minutes each day for independent practice. Use the chord chart to practice transitioning between chords smoothly and improving your strumming technique. Experiment with different songs and create your own chord progressions.
