Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic principles of physics through exploring and playing with Magnatiles.
Materials and Prep
- Magnatiles set
- A flat surface to build on
- An open mind and curiosity!
No prior knowledge or preparation is needed for this lesson.
Activities
- Start by exploring the Magnatiles set. Notice the different shapes and colors of the tiles.
- Build a simple structure, like a tower, using the Magnatiles. Observe how the tiles stick together and how they can be easily rearranged.
- Experiment with different ways to connect the Magnatiles. Try connecting them at different angles and orientations.
- Test the strength of your structures by adding more Magnatiles to them. See how tall or wide you can make your structures before they collapse.
- Discuss and observe how the Magnatiles use magnets to stick together. Talk about how magnets have a force that attracts or repels certain materials.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Magnatiles are special building blocks that use magnets to stick together. Magnets have a force that can attract or repel certain materials."
- "When we build with Magnatiles, we can create different structures by connecting the tiles together."
- "We can make our structures taller or wider by adding more Magnatiles to them."
- "Magnatiles are fun to play with because they allow us to use our imagination and creativity to build different things."
- "By experimenting with different ways to connect the Magnatiles, we can learn about balance and stability in our structures."
- "Magnatiles are a great way to explore the basic principles of physics, which is the study of how things move and interact with each other."
