Objective

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Internet access
  • No prior knowledge of Japanese required

Activities

  1. Watch a video game trailer or gameplay video in Japanese:

    • Choose a video game that the student is familiar with and find a trailer or gameplay video with Japanese audio and subtitles.
    • Watch the video together and encourage the student to listen carefully to the Japanese words and phrases used.
    • Pause the video at certain points to discuss any unfamiliar words or phrases.
  2. Create a vocabulary list:

    • Ask the student to write down any Japanese words or phrases related to video games that they heard in the video.
    • Encourage them to use online dictionaries or translation tools to find the meanings of the words.
    • Discuss the meanings together and practice pronouncing the words.
  3. Design a video game character:

    • Ask the student to create their own video game character using their imagination.
    • Encourage them to think about the character's appearance, personality, and special abilities.
    • Have the student write a short description of the character in both English and Japanese.
