Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to explore the connection between gardening and visual arts, and develop an appreciation for the artistic elements found in nature.
Materials and Prep
- Sketchbook or plain paper
- Pencils, erasers, and colored pencils
- Gardening tools (if available)
- Access to a garden or outdoor space
No prior knowledge or experience is necessary for this lesson.
Activities
- Take a Walk in the Garden
- Create a Botanical Collage
- Plant Your Own Art
Visit a garden or any outdoor space with plants. Observe the different shapes, colors, and textures of the plants. Take your sketchbook and pencils with you. Choose a plant that catches your attention and sketch it in your sketchbook, paying attention to the details. Add color if you'd like using colored pencils.
Collect fallen leaves, petals, or any other interesting natural materials from your garden or outdoor space. Arrange them on a piece of paper to create a collage. Glue them down once you are satisfied with the composition. You can also draw additional elements using your pencils.
If you have access to gardening tools and seeds, plant your own flowers or vegetables. Choose a plant that you find visually appealing. Take care of it and watch it grow. Document its growth by taking photos or making sketches at different stages.
