Materials and Prep

  • Various natural materials such as flowers, leaves, fruits, and vegetables
  • Mortar and pestle
  • Small containers for mixing

  • Paper or canvas for painting
  • Paintbrushes
  • Protective apron or old clothes

Make sure to gather the materials before starting the lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Natural Pigments: Start by discussing what natural pigments are and their historical significance in art.
  2. Exploring Natural Materials: Take a nature walk or explore your backyard to collect various natural materials like flowers, leaves, fruits, and vegetables.
  3. Preparing Pigments: Use a mortar and pestle to grind the collected materials into a fine powder. Separate them into different containers.
  4. Creating Paint: Add a small amount of water to each container of powdered pigment and mix well to create your own natural paints.
  5. Painting with Natural Pigments: Use the natural pigments you created to paint on paper or canvas. Experiment with different colors and techniques.
