Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to solve basic arithmetic problems while learning about astronomy.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
- Astronomy-themed pictures or posters (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Start by discussing with your child their interest in astronomy. Show them any astronomy-themed pictures or posters you may have to spark their curiosity.
-
Introduce the concept of addition and subtraction using celestial objects. For example, you can say, "Imagine you have 5 stars and you give away 2 stars. How many stars do you have left?" Let your child solve the problem on their own using the pencil and paper.
-
Continue with a few more addition and subtraction problems using different numbers of celestial objects. Encourage your child to visualize the problem and draw representations if needed.
-
Next, introduce the concept of multiplication using planets. For instance, ask your child, "If each planet has 2 moons, and there are 3 planets, how many moons are there in total?" Let your child solve the problem using their understanding of multiplication.
-
Continue with a few more multiplication problems using different numbers of planets and moons.
-
Finally, end the lesson by discussing division using asteroids. Ask your child, "If there are 8 asteroids and you want to share them equally among 2 friends, how many asteroids will each friend get?" Let your child solve the problem using their knowledge of division.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Astronomy is the study of stars, planets, and other objects in space."
- "Addition is when we combine two or more numbers to find the total."
- "Subtraction is when we take away a number from another number to find the difference."
- "Multiplication is a way to find the total when we have groups of the same number."
- "Division is a way to share or divide a number into equal parts."
