Objective

By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts through fun activities related to Blippi.

Materials and Prep

  • Blippi videos or episodes
  • Counting objects (could be toys, blocks, or any other objects)
  • Pen and paper for drawing

No specific knowledge or preparation is required beforehand.

Activities

  1. Watch a Blippi video that focuses on counting or basic addition and subtraction. Pause the video at certain points and ask the toddler to count the objects or solve simple addition/subtraction problems.
  2. Using the counting objects, have the toddler practice counting from 1 to 10. Encourage them to touch each object as they count.
  3. Draw simple addition and subtraction problems on the paper. For example, draw 2 apples and ask the toddler to draw 1 more apple to find the total. Similarly, draw 3 balloons and ask the toddler to cross out 1 balloon to find the remaining number.
  4. Play a game of "Blippi Says". Give the toddler simple arithmetic commands such as "Blippi says, clap your hands 3 times" or "Blippi says, jump 2 times". Encourage them to follow the commands and count the number of actions they perform.

Toddler Grade Talking Points

  • "We are going to learn about counting and adding and taking away things, just like Blippi does in his videos!"
  • "Counting means saying numbers in order, like 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. Let's practice counting together!"
  • "Sometimes we can add things together. For example, if we have 2 apples and we add 1 more apple, we get a total of 3 apples. Can you draw 3 apples for me?"
  • "Subtraction means taking away. If we have 3 balloons and we take away 1 balloon, how many balloons are left? Can you cross out 1 balloon for me?"
  • "Let's play a game called 'Blippi Says'. I will give you commands, and we will count how many times we do them. Are you ready?"
