Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand some basic concepts of chemistry and conduct simple experiments.
Materials and Prep
- Water
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Food coloring (optional)
- Plastic cups
- Measuring spoons
- Small containers or bowls
- Eye dropper or pipette
- Apron or old clothes
- Adult supervision
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Colorful Volcano:
- In a small container or bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with a few drops of food coloring (if desired).
- Place the container on a tray or in a sink to contain any spills.
- Slowly pour vinegar into the container using an eye dropper or pipette.
- Observe the colorful eruption that occurs as the vinegar reacts with the baking soda.
-
Fizzing Cups:
- Fill several plastic cups halfway with water.
- Add different amounts of baking soda to each cup, using measuring spoons.
- Slowly pour vinegar into each cup and observe the fizzing reaction.
- Experiment with different measurements and combinations to see how the reaction changes.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Chemistry is a type of science that helps us understand how things are made up and how they can change."
- "Today, we are going to do some fun experiments with baking soda and vinegar to see how they react."
- "When we mix baking soda and vinegar, they create a chemical reaction that makes things fizz and bubble."
- "We can add colors to our experiments to make them even more exciting and colorful."
- "Remember to always have an adult with you when doing experiments, and it's a good idea to wear an apron or old clothes to protect yourself."
