Dino-Mite Nouns and Verbs!

Get ready for a roaring adventure into the world of words! Today, we're going on a dinosaur dig to find two special types of words: Nouns and Verbs.

What are Nouns and Verbs?

  • Nouns are words that name a person, place, thing, or idea. Think of dinosaurs, fossils, volcanoes, or paleontologists!
  • Verbs are words that show action or a state of being. Think of dinosaurs that stomp, roar, eat, or sleep!

Warm-up: Dino Brainstorm (5 minutes)

Let's think about dinosaurs! What words come to mind? (Examples: T-Rex, big, teeth, run, roar, scary, museum, bones, plant-eater).

Activity 1: Noun Fossil Hunt (15 minutes)

Imagine we're digging for fossils! Read these sentences. Can you find the nouns (the 'things' or 'names')? Underline them!

  1. The T-Rex had sharp teeth.
  2. A Stegosaurus munched on plants.
  3. Fossils were found near the river.
  4. The paleontologist used a brush.
  5. A giant Brachiosaurus walked through the forest.

(Review answers together. Discuss why each underlined word is a noun.)

Activity 2: Verb Volcano Eruption (15 minutes)

Uh oh, the volcano is erupting... with action words (verbs)! Read these sentences. Can you spot the verbs (the 'actions')? Circle them!

  1. The Pterodactyl flew through the sky.
  2. Velociraptors hunted in packs.
  3. The Triceratops charged at its enemy.
  4. Baby dinosaurs hatched from eggs.
  5. The Spinosaurus swam in the water.

(Review answers together. Act out some of the verbs!)

Activity 3: Sentence Stomp! (15 minutes)

Now let's put our nouns and verbs together! Use one noun card and one verb card to make a silly or serious dinosaur sentence. Write down 3 sentences.

Example: Noun: egg, Verb: rolled -> The egg rolled down the hill.

(Share sentences aloud.)

Wrap-up & Assessment (5 minutes)

Great job, dino explorer! Today we learned about nouns (naming words like dinosaur) and verbs (action words like roar). Can you tell me one noun and one verb we talked about today?

(Optional: Draw a picture of a dinosaur doing an action and label the noun (dinosaur) and the verb (action).)
