Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and describe the uses of different herbs commonly used in herbal medicine.
Materials and Prep
- Various herbs (such as peppermint, chamomile, lavender, etc.)
- Small containers or bags to hold the herbs
- Scissors
- Whiteboard or large paper with markers
- Internet access (optional)
Activities
Introduction: Begin by discussing what herbal medicine is and how it has been used for centuries to promote health and well-being. Show pictures or examples of different herbs and explain that they come from plants.
Herb Identification: Display the various herbs and have the student use their senses (smell, touch, and sight) to identify each herb. Discuss the characteristics of each herb and its common uses in herbal medicine.
Herb Sorting: Provide the student with a sorting activity where they match the herb to its corresponding use. For example, they can match peppermint to its use for soothing an upset stomach.
Herb Art: Encourage the student to create a piece of art using the herbs as inspiration. They can draw or paint the herbs, or even create a collage using cutouts of the herbs.
Herb Tea: Prepare a simple herbal tea using one or more of the herbs discussed. Brew the tea and let the student taste it. Discuss the flavors and any potential health benefits.
