Super Mario Reading Adventure!
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Subject: Language Arts: Reading
Theme: Super Mario Bros.
Lesson Activities:
1. Power-Up Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Let's get ready to read! Show the pictures/figures of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser. Ask the student:
- "Do you know who these characters are?"
- "What game are they from?"
- "Who is the hero? Who is usually the villain?"
Briefly introduce that today's reading adventure is all about Mario and his friends!
2. Level 1: Story Time! (10-15 minutes)
Read the simple Super Mario Bros. themed story aloud together. Point to the words as you read.
- Encourage the student to point out the characters when they appear in the story or pictures.
- Emphasize the target sight words ('go', 'jump', 'see') when you encounter them. Read them together a few times.
- After reading, ask simple questions: "Who did Mario see?", "What did Luigi do?", "Where did they go?"
3. Level 2: Sight Word Stars (10 minutes)
Introduce the sight word flashcards. Say each word clearly.
- Activity: Character Match! Place the character pictures out. Say a sight word (e.g., "jump"). Ask the student to find the word card and place it next to a character who likes to jump (Mario or Luigi!). Repeat with other words ('go' with Mario, 'see' with Peach looking for Mario). Make it fun! Maybe have the character figure 'stomp' on the correct card.
4. Level 3: Story Sequence Quest (10 minutes)
Show the three picture cards depicting simple events from the story (e.g., 1. Mario sees a Goomba. 2. Mario jumps. 3. Mario gets a coin.). Mix them up.
- Activity: Ask the student to put the pictures in the correct order: "What happened first? Then what happened? What happened last?" Help them retell the mini-story using the pictures as guides.
5. Boss Battle: Creative Craft (10-15 minutes)
Let's make a character! Provide construction paper in Mario (red), Luigi (green), Bowser (orange/yellow/green), or Peach (pink/yellow) colors.
- Activity: Help the student cut out simple shapes (circle for head, rectangle for body, smaller rectangles for arms/legs) to create their favorite character. They can draw the face and details with crayons/markers. While crafting, review the character's name and maybe one action they did in the story (e.g., "Mario jumps!").
6. Course Clear! (Wrap-up) (5 minutes)
Review the characters identified and the sight words learned. Ask the student to point to the sight word 'go' or 'jump'. Praise their super reading effort!
Optional Extension: If time permits, use blocks to build a simple 'level' for the character figures.
