Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts while having fun cleaning.
Materials and Prep
- Cleaning supplies (child-friendly and safe)
- Counting cards or number flashcards
- A small bucket or container
- A soft cloth or sponge
Before starting the lesson, make sure the cleaning supplies are child-friendly and safe to use. Familiarize yourself with the counting cards or number flashcards.
Activities
- Clean and Count: Start by explaining to the toddler that cleaning can be fun and educational. Give them a small bucket or container filled with water and a soft cloth or sponge. Encourage them to clean different surfaces while counting the number of wipes they make. For example, say, "Let's clean the table. Can you count how many times you wipe it?" Repeat this activity for various surfaces.
- Sorting and Counting: Introduce the concept of sorting and counting. Ask the toddler to pick up toys or objects from a designated area and sort them into different piles based on their shape, color, or size. Then, ask them to count how many items are in each pile. For instance, say, "Let's sort these toys. Can you count how many blue cars we have?"
- Mathematical Patterns: Create a simple pattern using cleaning supplies or household objects. For example, arrange a sequence of different colored cleaning cloths (e.g., blue, yellow, blue, yellow). Ask the toddler to continue the pattern by adding the next color. This activity helps them understand patterns and sequences.
Toddler Grade Talking Points
- "Cleaning can be a fun activity that helps us learn about numbers and counting."
- "When we clean, we can count how many times we wipe a surface."
- "Sorting means putting things into groups based on their similarities."
- "We can count how many toys are in each group after we sort them."
- "Patterns are sequences that repeat in a specific way."
- "We can create patterns using different colors or objects."
