Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic skills while exploring mathematical concepts in Minecraft and Pokemon.
Materials and Prep
- Minecraft game
- Pokemon cards or images
- Pencil and paper
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Math in Minecraft:
In Minecraft, create a house using blocks. Count the number of blocks used for each part of the house (walls, roof, doors, windows, etc.). Write down the numbers and add them together to find the total number of blocks used in the house.
- Pokemon Math:
Choose a few Pokemon cards or images. Assign each Pokemon a number value (e.g., Pikachu = 5, Charmander = 3, Squirtle = 2). Create addition and subtraction problems using the Pokemon numbers. Solve the problems and write down the answers.
- Math Challenges:
Create your own math challenges related to Minecraft or Pokemon. For example, calculate the number of blocks needed to build a specific structure in Minecraft, or determine the total number of Pokemon cards needed to complete a collection. Solve the challenges and share your solutions.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Math is all around us, even in our favorite games like Minecraft and Pokemon!"
- "In Minecraft, we can practice addition by counting the number of blocks used to build different parts of a house."
- "With Pokemon cards, we can use numbers to create addition and subtraction problems. We can also assign values to each Pokemon and practice addition and subtraction with them."
- "Let's create our own math challenges related to Minecraft and Pokemon to make math even more fun and engaging!"
