By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to appreciate and create visual art inspired by the Norwegian fjords during the holiday season.

Materials and Prep

  • Sketchbook or drawing paper
  • Pencils, erasers, and colored pencils
  • Reference images of Norwegian fjords
  • Access to the internet for research
  • Optional: Watercolor paints and brushes

Prior knowledge of basic drawing techniques would be helpful but not required.

Activities

  1. Research: Begin by exploring images and information about the Norwegian fjords and their holiday traditions. Take note of the unique landscapes, architecture, and cultural elements.
  2. Sketching: Use the reference images as inspiration to create a series of sketches capturing the beauty and essence of the Norwegian fjords during the holiday season. Experiment with different perspectives and compositions.
  3. Coloring: Select one of your sketches and bring it to life by adding color using colored pencils. Pay attention to the play of light and shadow, as well as the vibrant colors often associated with the holiday season.
  4. Optional: Watercolor Painting: If you have watercolor paints and brushes, you can also try painting one of your sketches using this medium. Explore the use of washes and layering to create depth and texture.
  5. Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on your artwork. What elements of the Norwegian fjords did you capture? How did you incorporate the holiday spirit into your piece? Share your thoughts and observations.
