Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore autumn-themed books and engage in language arts activities related to reading.
Materials and Prep
- Autumn-themed books (e.g., "Fall Leaves Fall!" by Zoe Hall, "We're Going on a Leaf Hunt" by Steve Metzger)
- Writing materials (crayons, markers, pencils)
- Autumn-themed worksheets (optional)
Activities
- Read an autumn-themed book aloud to the student. Pause at various points to ask questions and engage in discussions about the story.
- After reading, encourage the student to retell the story in their own words. Ask them to identify the main characters, the setting, and the main events of the story.
- Provide the student with a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw their favorite part of the story. Encourage them to use colors that remind them of autumn.
- Ask the student to dictate a sentence or two describing their drawing. Write down their words and read it back to them. Encourage them to point to each word as you read.
- Optional: Provide autumn-themed worksheets for the student to practice tracing and writing letters or words related to the story.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to read a special book about autumn. Autumn is a season when the leaves change colors and fall from the trees."
- "When we read the book, we will stop sometimes and talk about what is happening in the story. I want to hear your thoughts and ideas."
- "After we finish reading, I want you to tell me what happened in the story. Who were the main characters? Where did the story take place?"
- "Now, I want you to draw your favorite part of the story. Use the colors that remind you of autumn, like red, orange, and yellow."
- "Tell me about your drawing. What did you draw? Can you describe it to me? I will write down your words and read it back to you."
- "If you want more practice, we have some worksheets that you can use to trace and write letters or words from the story."
