Objective
By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to identify and describe autumn-related objects and concepts, and demonstrate understanding of basic reading skills through engaging activities.
Materials and Prep
- Fall-themed picture books
- Autumn-related flashcards (e.g., leaves, pumpkins, apples)
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Construction paper
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Read Aloud: Start the lesson by reading a fall-themed picture book to the toddler. Encourage them to look at the pictures and ask questions about what they see.
- Flashcard Match-Up: Show the toddler the autumn-related flashcards one by one and ask them to name each object. Then, help them match the flashcards to the corresponding pictures in the book.
- Leaf Collage: Cut out leaf shapes from different colored construction paper. Let the toddler glue the leaves onto a larger piece of construction paper to create their own autumn leaf collage. While working on the collage, talk about the colors and shapes of the leaves.
- Story Retelling: Choose a short story from the picture book and ask the toddler to retell the story in their own words. Encourage them to use the pictures as prompts and help them with any missing details.
Toddler Grade Talking Points
- "Autumn is a season when the leaves on the trees change color and fall off."
- "We can see different colors in autumn, like red, orange, and yellow."
- "Pumpkins are a symbol of autumn. They are round and orange, and we can carve them for Halloween."
- "Apples are also associated with autumn. We can pick apples from trees and make delicious treats with them."
- "When we read a story, we can look at the pictures and tell the story in our own words."
- "We can use different shapes and colors to create our own artwork, like a leaf collage."
