Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create your own geology-inspired artwork using practical arts techniques.

Materials and Prep

  • Sketchbook or drawing paper
  • Pencils, erasers, and sharpeners
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Reference materials about geology (books, websites, etc.)

Before starting the lesson, familiarize yourself with different types of rocks, geological formations, and geological processes.

Activities

  1. Research and Sketch: Begin by researching different geological formations and rocks. Look for interesting shapes, textures, and colors. Use your sketchbook to make rough sketches of the formations that catch your attention.
  2. Choose a Composition: Select one or more of your sketches and decide on a composition for your artwork. Consider the placement of the formations, the overall balance, and any additional elements you may want to include.
  3. Refine and Add Details: Use your pencils to refine your sketch, adding more details and shading. Pay attention to the textures and patterns found in the rocks. Experiment with different shading techniques to create depth and dimension.
  4. Add Color: Once you are satisfied with your pencil sketch, start adding color using colored pencils or markers. Use your reference materials to accurately depict the colors of the rocks and geological formations.
  5. Final Touches: Take a step back and evaluate your artwork. Make any necessary adjustments or enhancements to make it visually appealing. Consider adding a background or additional elements to complement the geological theme.
