Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic environmental science concepts related to toy cars.

Materials and Prep

  • Toy cars
  • Container with water
  • Container with soil
  • Container with rocks
  • Container with grass or plants
  • Optional: magnifying glass

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have the materials ready and a clear space to work in.

Activities

  1. Explore Different Surfaces: Place the toy cars on different surfaces like water, soil, rocks, and grass. Observe how the cars interact with each surface. Discuss the differences in movement and explain why certain surfaces are easier or harder for the cars to move on.
  2. Observe and Compare: Use the magnifying glass to examine the surfaces more closely. Look for any changes or effects on the toy cars caused by the different surfaces. Compare the surfaces and discuss their characteristics, such as texture, hardness, and smoothness.
  3. Discussion: Have a conversation about the importance of taking care of the environment. Explain how different surfaces can be affected by pollution or human activities. Encourage the student to share their ideas on how we can help protect the environment and keep it clean for toy cars and other living things.

Preschool Grade Talking Points

  • "Toy cars can move differently on different surfaces. Some surfaces are smooth, like water, and make the cars slide easily. Other surfaces, like soil or rocks, can be bumpy and make the cars go slower."
  • "When we use a magnifying glass, we can see the tiny details on the surfaces. We can find out if they are rough or smooth, and if they have any special features like cracks or bumps."
  • "Taking care of the environment means keeping it clean and healthy. We should not throw trash on the ground or pollute the water. This helps the plants, animals, and toy cars to be happy and safe."
  • "We can help the environment by picking up trash we see, using less water, and recycling. It's important to treat the Earth kindly so that we can enjoy playing with our toy cars and have a beautiful world to live in."
