By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and locate the 50 states of the United States on a map.
Materials and Prep
- Blank map of the United States
- Colored pencils or markers
- Internet access (optional)
Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of cardinal directions (north, south, east, west).
Activities
- Introduction: Show the student a map of the United States and briefly discuss its shape and size. Ask the student if they know how many states are in the United States.
- Main Activity: Give the student a blank map of the United States and ask them to label and color each state. Encourage them to use different colors for different regions and to label the states with their names.
- Extension Activity: If the student finishes labeling and coloring the states quickly, challenge them to research and find one interesting fact about each state. They can write the facts next to each state on the map or create a separate list.
- Closure: Review the completed map with the student. Ask them to point out a few states and share one interesting fact they learned.
