Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe the functions of the muscular and skeletal systems in the human body.
Materials and Prep
- Chart paper or whiteboard
- Markers or chalk
- Index cards
- Scissors
- Tape
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of the human body and its different systems.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Muscle Movement
Stand up and try different movements like jumping, running, or stretching. Observe how your muscles are working to allow you to move. Discuss with your parent or guardian what you notice about your muscles during different movements.
-
Activity 2: Skeleton Puzzle
Create a skeleton puzzle using index cards. Cut out different bones and label them. Mix up the cards and then try to put the skeleton puzzle back together. Discuss with your parent or guardian the importance of the skeleton in supporting and protecting our bodies.
-
Activity 3: Muscular and Skeletal System Chart
Create a chart on the chart paper or whiteboard. Draw and label the muscular and skeletal systems. Write down the functions of each system. Discuss with your parent or guardian why these systems are important for our bodies to function properly.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Our bodies have different systems that help us function, just like a machine has different parts."
- "The muscular system helps us move by contracting and relaxing our muscles. It also helps us maintain our posture."
- "The skeletal system is like the framework of our body. It provides support, protects important organs, and helps us move."
- "Did you know that we have more than 600 muscles in our bodies? They come in different sizes and shapes."
- "The skeletal system is made up of bones. We have around 206 bones in our bodies. Some bones protect our brain, heart, and lungs!"
- "Our muscles and bones work together to help us do everyday activities like walking, running, and even smiling!"
