How Animals Are Born: Live Birth vs Eggs | 3rd Grade Science Lesson Plan

Welcome to the World! How Animals Are Born

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Subject: Science (Biology)


Introduction (5-10 minutes)

Ask the student: "Have you ever seen a baby animal? Like a puppy, a kitten, or maybe a baby bird? Where do you think they come from?" Discuss their initial ideas. Explain that today we're going on an adventure to discover the amazing ways animals are born!


Activity 1: Two Ways to Be Born! (15-20 minutes)

1. Live Birth (Like Us!): Explain that some animals, called mammals (like dogs, cats, horses, whales, and us!), grow inside their mother's body in a special place. When they are ready, they are born alive. Use animal figurines or pictures if available. Show a picture of a mammal mother and baby (e.g., a cat and kittens).

2. Hatching from Eggs: Explain that many other animals start life inside an egg, which the mother lays. The baby grows inside the egg until it's ready to hatch out. Talk about different animals that lay eggs:
- Birds (chickens, robins, penguins)
- Reptiles (turtles, snakes, lizards)
- Amphibians (frogs, salamanders - often lay soft eggs in water)
- Fish (most fish lay eggs in water)
- Insects (butterflies, ants, beetles)

Optional Video Break: If comfortable, watch short, age-appropriate clips of animals being born live or hatching from eggs (ensure clips are not graphic and focus on the emergence). Discuss what was observed.


Activity 2: Draw and Compare! (15 minutes)

Take the large paper or whiteboard. Draw a line down the middle. Label one side "Live Birth (Mammals)" and the other side "Born from Eggs."
Ask the student to name animals for each side. Write them down.
Have the student draw a simple picture for each category. For example, draw a puppy next to its mother on the "Live Birth" side, and draw a chick hatching from an egg on the "Born from Eggs" side.
Discuss the drawings: "What's different about how the puppy started versus how the chick started?" (Inside mom vs. inside an egg).


Activity 3: Animal Match-Up (5-10 minutes)

If you have animal figures or pictures, mix them up. Have the student sort them into two groups: 'Live Birth' and 'Born from Eggs'. Talk about their choices.


Assessment & Discussion (5 minutes)

Ask questions to check understanding:
- "Can you tell me one way animals are born?" (Live birth)
- "What's another way?" (From eggs)
- "Give me an example of an animal that has live birth." (Dog, cat, human, etc.)
- "Give me an example of an animal that hatches from an egg." (Bird, snake, turtle, fish, etc.)
- "Are humans born live or from eggs?" (Live)


Wrap-up (2-3 minutes)

"Wow! We learned about two super interesting ways animals start their lives today – being born live like mammals, or hatching from eggs like birds and reptiles. Isn't nature amazing? Different animals have different ways to bring their babies into the world!"


Possible Extension:

Talk briefly about parental care – do mother mammals feed their babies milk? Do birds sit on their eggs to keep them warm? Do fish parents usually stick around?
