Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and create basic geometric shapes using Legos.
Materials and Prep
- Legos (various colors and sizes)
- A flat surface to build on
- A printout or drawing of basic geometric shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle)
Activities
- Introduction to Shapes: Show the printout or drawing of basic geometric shapes to the student. Discuss each shape and its characteristics (e.g., a circle has no corners, a square has four equal sides and corners, etc.).
- Building Shapes: Using the Legos, ask the student to build different shapes they have just learned about. Encourage them to use different colors for each shape to make it more visually appealing.
- Shape Hunt: Hide some Legos around the room and ask the student to find specific shapes. For example, "Can you find a square Lego?" or "Where is the triangle Lego hiding?" This activity will reinforce their understanding of the shapes and help them recognize them in different contexts.
- Create a Shape: Challenge the student to create their own unique shape using the Legos. They can combine different pieces to form a new shape. Encourage them to name their shape and describe its characteristics.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to learn about shapes and build them with Legos!"
- "Shapes are all around us. Can you think of any shapes you see in your everyday life?"
- "A circle is a shape that has no corners. Can you find something in our room that is shaped like a circle?"
- "A square has four equal sides and corners. Can you find something in our room that is shaped like a square?"
- "A triangle has three sides and three corners. Can you find something in our room that is shaped like a triangle?"
- "Let's use our Legos to build different shapes. Can you build a square using the Legos?"
- "Now, let's go on a shape hunt! Can you find a circle Lego in the room?"
- "Great job! Now, let's get creative and build our own unique shape using the Legos. What will you call your shape?"
