Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and describe the life cycles of different animals.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen or pencil
  • Blank paper
  • Coloring materials (crayons, colored pencils, or markers)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Draw and label the life cycle of a butterfly.

Start by drawing an oval shape in the center of your paper. Write "Butterfly" inside the oval. Then, draw and label the four stages of a butterfly's life cycle: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult butterfly.

  2. Research and create a poster about the life cycle of a frog.

Use your favorite search engine to find information about the life cycle of a frog. Draw and label the different stages of the life cycle on your poster. Include a brief description of each stage. Be creative and colorful!

  3. Observe and document the life cycle of a plant.

Find a small plant or seed and place it in a pot or cup with soil. Water it regularly and observe its growth over the next few weeks. Draw and write about the changes you notice in your plant's life cycle.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Animals go through different stages in their life, just like we do."
  • "The life cycle of a butterfly starts with an egg, then it becomes a caterpillar, then it forms a chrysalis, and finally, it emerges as an adult butterfly."
  • "Frogs also have a fascinating life cycle. They start as eggs, then become tadpoles, then grow into froglets, and eventually transform into adult frogs."
  • "Plants have life cycles too! They start as seeds, then grow into seedlings, then become mature plants with flowers or fruits, and eventually produce seeds of their own."
