Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the logic behind air and atmosphere in Earth Science.
Materials and Prep
- Pen and paper
- Internet access (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Air Around Us
Step 1: Look around your immediate surroundings and observe the presence of air.
Step 2: Write down at least three things that demonstrate the existence of air.
Step 3: Share your observations with a family member or friend.
-
Activity 2: Air Pressure
Step 1: Take a balloon and inflate it.
Step 2: Observe what happens when you release the balloon without tying it.
Step 3: Write down your observations and explain why you think it happened.
-
Activity 3: Air Composition
Step 1: Research the composition of air and its different components (such as nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc.).
Step 2: Create a simple chart or diagram to represent the percentage of each component in the atmosphere.
Step 3: Share your findings with someone and discuss the importance of each component in our daily lives.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Air is all around us, even though we can't see it."
- "Air is made up of different gases, such as nitrogen and oxygen."
- "The air we breathe is important for our survival."
- "Air pressure is the force exerted by the weight of air."
- "Air pressure can be measured using special tools called barometers."
- "The composition of air can vary in different places."
- "Different living things need different amounts of oxygen to survive."
