Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the logic-based concepts related to air and the atmosphere.
Materials and Prep
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Air or Not?
Take a walk outside and observe your surroundings. Look for things that are made of air and things that are not. Make a list of at least five items in each category. Discuss your findings with a parent or guardian.
-
Activity 2: Air Pressure Experiment
Fill a plastic bag with air and seal it tightly. Use a pen or pencil to poke a small hole in the bag. Observe what happens. Write down your observations and discuss why the bag behaves the way it does with a parent or guardian.
-
Activity 3: Air Around Us
Draw a picture or create a collage that represents the different layers of the atmosphere. Label each layer and write a short description of its characteristics. Share your creation with a parent or guardian, explaining what you have learned.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Air is all around us, even though we can't see it."
- "Air is made up of tiny particles called molecules."
- "Air takes up space and can be felt through activities like blowing up a balloon."
- "Air pressure is the force exerted by the weight of air molecules. It can be higher or lower depending on various factors."
- "The atmosphere is the layer of air that surrounds the Earth. It is divided into different layers, such as the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere."
