Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice your times tables while improving your reading skills.
Materials and Prep
- A piece of paper
- A pencil or pen
Before starting this lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of multiplication and are familiar with the times tables up to 12.
Activities
-
Choose a times table you want to practice. Write down the multiplication equation for each number in that times table.
For example, if you choose the 4 times table, you would write:
4 x 1 = 4
4 x 2 = 8
4 x 3 = 12
...
Continue until you have written down the equation for each number up to 12.
-
Now, read each equation out loud and solve it in your head. Write down the answer next to each equation.
For example, for the equation 4 x 1 = 4, you would say "Four times one equals four" and write down the answer as 4.
Continue this process for all the equations you wrote down.
-
Once you have solved all the equations, read them out loud again, but this time, say the equation and the answer together.
For example, for the equation 4 x 1 = 4, you would say "Four times one equals four" and then "4 x 1 equals 4."
Repeat this step for all the equations.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "In this lesson, we are going to practice our times tables while also improving our reading skills."
- "We will start by choosing a times table that we want to practice. This means we will focus on multiplying numbers by that specific number."
- "We will write down the multiplication equations for each number in the times table."
- "Next, we will read each equation out loud and solve it in our heads. We will write down the answers next to each equation."
- "After that, we will read the equations again, but this time, we will say the equation and the answer together."
- "By doing this activity, we will reinforce our times tables knowledge and practice our reading skills at the same time."
