Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use basic arithmetic skills to count and add Legos.
Materials and Prep
- Legos (various colors and sizes)
- Counting cards or number flashcards
- Writing materials (paper and crayons)
Activities
-
Counting Legos: Start by showing your student a pile of Legos. Ask them to count how many Legos are in the pile and write down the number on a piece of paper. Repeat this activity with different piles of Legos, gradually increasing the number of Legos in each pile.
-
Addition with Legos: Take two different colored Legos and ask your student to count how many Legos are in each group. Then, combine the two groups and ask your student to count the total number of Legos. Write down the addition equation (e.g., 3 + 2 = 5) and explain that adding means putting two groups together to get a total.
-
Building Towers: Encourage your student to build towers using Legos of different colors and sizes. Ask them to count how many Legos they used for each tower and write down the number. Help them compare the heights of different towers and discuss which one is taller, shorter, or the same height.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Counting means saying numbers in order, like 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on."
- "When we add, we put two groups together to find out how many there are in total."
- "We can use Legos to build towers. We can count how many Legos we use for each tower."
- "We can compare the heights of different towers. Some towers might be taller, some might be shorter, and some might be the same height."
