Welcome to the Potion Lab!

Have you ever brewed potions in Minecraft? You mix different ingredients to get cool effects like invisibility or speed! Real-life science, especially chemistry, is a lot like potion-making. We mix things together to see what happens. Today, we're going to be chemists and create our own amazing (and safe!) potions using things from the kitchen!

Safety First!

Even though we're using safe kitchen stuff, real scientists always think about safety. We won't taste our potions, and it's good to do this on a tray in case things get bubbly!

Potion #1: The Potion of Invisibility (Making a Solution)

  1. Fill a clear cup about halfway with water.
  2. Add one spoonful of sugar (or salt) to the water.
  3. Stir the mixture well with your spoon.
  4. Observe! What happened to the sugar? Can you still see it clearly?

Discussion: When something dissolves completely into a liquid, like the sugar in the water, it's called a solution. It looks like the sugar 'disappeared' or became invisible!

Potion #2: The Potion of Slowness (Making a Mixture)

  1. Fill another clear cup about halfway with water.
  2. Carefully add a tiny bit of something that doesn't dissolve easily, like a pinch of flour or a few drops of cooking oil (ask a grown-up for help).
  3. Stir the mixture.
  4. Observe! Does this look the same as the sugar water? Can you still see the little bits floating around or separated?

Discussion: When you mix things together but can still see the different parts, it's called a mixture. It hasn't dissolved completely like the solution.

Potion #3: The Potion of Harming (Making a Reaction!)

  1. Place a clean, empty cup on your tray.
  2. Add about two spoonfuls of baking soda to the cup.
  3. Add a small squirt of dish soap.
  4. Add a few drops of food coloring if you want!
  5. Now, the magic ingredient! Slowly pour about 1/4 cup of vinegar into the cup with the baking soda.
  6. Observe! What happens immediately?

Discussion: Wow! Look at those bubbles! When baking soda (a base) and vinegar (an acid) mix, they cause a chemical reaction. This reaction releases a gas called carbon dioxide, making all those fizzy bubbles! The soap helps trap the gas to make even more foam. This is different from just mixing or dissolving – a new substance (the gas) was created!

Time to record your findings! On your paper:

  1. Draw each of your three potions.
  2. Label them ('Invisibility/Solution', 'Slowness/Mixture', 'Harming/Reaction').
  3. Write or draw one thing you observed about each potion (e.g., 'sugar disappeared', 'saw floaty bits', 'lots of bubbles!').
