Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic concepts in a fun and engaging way by relating them to the sport of lacrosse.
Materials and Prep
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper or notebook
- Calculator (optional)
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Lacrosse Score Calculation
Ask the student to imagine that they are keeping score for a lacrosse game. Provide them with a scenario where Team A scores 3 goals and Team B scores 5 goals. Ask the student to calculate the total number of goals scored in the game.
-
Activity 2: Lacrosse Statistics
Give the student a set of statistics for a lacrosse player. For example, Player X has scored 12 goals in the past 6 games. Ask the student to calculate the average number of goals scored per game by dividing the total goals by the number of games played.
-
Activity 3: Lacrosse Time Calculation
Provide the student with a scenario where a lacrosse game starts at 3:30 PM and ends at 5:15 PM. Ask the student to calculate the duration of the game by subtracting the start time from the end time.
Sixth Grade Talking Points
- "In lacrosse, scoring goals is an important part of the game. We can use arithmetic to calculate the total number of goals scored by adding the goals of both teams."
- "When we have statistics about a player's performance, we can use arithmetic to find the average. This tells us how many goals the player scores on average per game."
- "Time is an essential element in sports. By subtracting the start time from the end time, we can calculate the duration of a game."
