Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Eighth grade-level homeschool student will be able to apply library skills to solve crossword puzzles.

Materials and Prep

  • Crossword puzzle worksheet
  • Pencil or pen
  • Access to a dictionary or online dictionary

Before starting the lesson, make sure the student understands the basic structure of crossword puzzles and is familiar with using a dictionary to look up word definitions.

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of crossword puzzles and explain how they are a fun way to test vocabulary and word knowledge.
  2. Provide the student with a crossword puzzle worksheet and ask them to solve it independently.
  3. Encourage the student to use their library skills to find the answers to the crossword clues. They can use a dictionary to look up definitions and synonyms, as well as reference books or online resources to gather information.
  4. Once the student has completed the crossword puzzle, review the answers together and discuss any challenging clues or new vocabulary words they encountered.
  5. Repeat the activity with a different crossword puzzle to reinforce the use of library skills in solving puzzles.
