Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Eighth grade-level homeschool student will be able to apply library skills to solve crossword puzzles.
Materials and Prep
- Crossword puzzle worksheet
- Pencil or pen
- Access to a dictionary or online dictionary
Before starting the lesson, make sure the student understands the basic structure of crossword puzzles and is familiar with using a dictionary to look up word definitions.
Activities
- Introduce the concept of crossword puzzles and explain how they are a fun way to test vocabulary and word knowledge.
- Provide the student with a crossword puzzle worksheet and ask them to solve it independently.
- Encourage the student to use their library skills to find the answers to the crossword clues. They can use a dictionary to look up definitions and synonyms, as well as reference books or online resources to gather information.
- Once the student has completed the crossword puzzle, review the answers together and discuss any challenging clues or new vocabulary words they encountered.
- Repeat the activity with a different crossword puzzle to reinforce the use of library skills in solving puzzles.
