Materials and Prep
- A simple recipe for a dish your student is interested in
- A notebook or paper for writing
- A pencil or pen
Before starting the lesson, make sure your student is familiar with basic reading skills such as letter recognition and phonics.
Activities
- Introduce the concept of a recipe and explain that it is a set of instructions for cooking a specific dish.
- Show your student the recipe you have chosen and read it together. Encourage them to point out any familiar words or ingredients.
- Ask your student to identify the steps in the recipe. Write down the steps on a piece of paper or notebook as they say them out loud.
- Read each step of the recipe one by one, and have your student follow along with their finger as you read.
- Discuss any unfamiliar words or ingredients and explain their meanings. Encourage your student to ask questions if they don't understand something.
- Guide your student through the process of gathering the ingredients and following the steps of the recipe. Assist them as needed, but encourage independence.
- Once the dish is prepared, have your student read the recipe again to check if all the steps were followed correctly.
