Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and describe characters and settings in a story, and make connections between the story and their own experiences.
Materials and Prep
- Minecraft-themed storybook
- Writing materials (paper and crayons/markers)
Activities
- Introduce the Minecraft-themed storybook to the student. Ask them if they have ever played Minecraft and what they like about it.
- Read the storybook aloud to the student, pausing occasionally to ask questions about the characters and settings in the story.
- After reading the story, ask the student to draw a picture of their favorite character or setting from the book. Encourage them to use their imagination and be creative.
- Once the drawing is complete, have the student describe their drawing to you. Ask them questions about why they chose that character or setting, and if it reminds them of anything in the Minecraft game.
- Help the student write a short sentence or two about their drawing. Encourage them to use descriptive words and proper sentence structure.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "In the story, there were different characters. Can you tell me who they were and what they did?"
- "What was the setting of the story? Where did the characters go?"
- "How is the character you drew similar or different from the characters in the Minecraft game?"
- "What did you like most about the story? Why?"
- "Can you tell me a sentence about your drawing? What words did you use to describe it?"
