Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using a pumpkin patch theme.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Pumpkin cutouts or drawings
- Counting manipulatives (e.g. buttons, beans, or small toys)
Before starting the lesson, make sure the student understands basic counting and number recognition.
Activities
-
Pumpkin Counting: Place the pumpkin cutouts or drawings on a table. Ask the student to count the number of pumpkins and write the number on their paper.
-
Addition Fun: Give the student a set of counting manipulatives. Ask them to pick two pumpkins and place them in front of them. Then, ask them to count the total number of pumpkins and write the addition equation (e.g. 1 + 1 = 2) on their paper.
-
Subtraction with Pumpkins: Give the student a set of counting manipulatives again. Ask them to pick three pumpkins and place them in front of them. Then, ask them to remove one pumpkin and count how many are left. Have them write the subtraction equation (e.g. 3 - 1 = 2) on their paper.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun with pumpkins and practice our math skills."
- "Let's count the pumpkins together. Can you tell me how many pumpkins there are?"
- "Now, let's add two pumpkins together. How many do we have in total?"
- "Great job! Now, let's try subtracting. If we have three pumpkins and we take away one, how many will be left?"
- "Remember, addition is when we put things together, and subtraction is when we take things away."
- "Keep practicing, and soon you'll be a pumpkin math expert!"
