Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will understand the importance of feeding wildlife and how it impacts the environment.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Access to a computer or smartphone with internet
  • Optional: Binoculars or camera for observing wildlife

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of ecosystems and food chains.

Activities

  1. Research: Use your computer or smartphone to research different types of wildlife commonly found in your area. Make a list of at least five species.

  2. Food Chain Game: Create a food chain using the species from your list. Start with a primary producer (plant) and include at least three levels of consumers. Draw or write out the food chain on paper.

  3. Impact Analysis: Write a short paragraph discussing the potential impacts of feeding wildlife. Consider both the positive and negative consequences.

  4. Observation: Spend some time outdoors observing wildlife in your backyard or a nearby park. Use binoculars or a camera to get a closer look. Take notes on what you see and any behaviors related to feeding.

  5. Reflection: Write a reflection on your observations. Did you notice any changes in behavior due to feeding? How do you think feeding wildlife can affect their natural habits?

Seventh Grade Talking Points

  • "Feeding wildlife can be a way to connect with nature and appreciate the diversity of species."
  • "However, it is important to understand the potential consequences of feeding wildlife."
  • "Feeding can disrupt natural food chains and lead to an overpopulation of certain species."
  • "It can also make wildlife dependent on humans for food, which can be harmful to their survival in the long run."
  • "Feeding should be done responsibly, following guidelines provided by wildlife experts or organizations."
