Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will understand how the digestive system works to provide energy for your body.
Materials and Prep
- No additional materials are needed for this lesson.
- Prior knowledge of basic human anatomy would be helpful.
Activities
-
Mission Briefing: Introduce the lesson by explaining that the student is a spy on a mission to uncover the secrets of the digestive system. Their goal is to understand how the digestive system helps the body get energy.
-
Agent Identification: Have the student draw a spy badge with their name and a special spy code name. This will help them feel like a real spy on their mission.
-
Investigating the Digestive System: Explain that the digestive system is like a spy team working together. Each team member has a specific role to play. Discuss the different parts of the digestive system, such as the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. Explain how each part helps in breaking down food and absorbing nutrients.
-
Undercover Operation: Give the student a piece of bread or cracker. Instruct them to take a small bite and hold it in their mouth. Ask them to think about what happens next and how it relates to the digestive system. After a minute, have them chew and swallow the food, explaining that this represents the food entering the esophagus and traveling to the stomach.
-
Secret Agent Absorption: Discuss the role of the small intestine in absorbing nutrients from the food. Explain that just like a spy collecting valuable information, the small intestine collects nutrients from the food and sends them to the bloodstream to provide energy for the body.
-
Final Report: Have the student create a spy report detailing what they have learned about the digestive system. They can include drawings or diagrams to illustrate the different parts and their functions.
